OVER a thousand people gathered on the main Newry/ Dundalk road last Sunday to attend the annual Edentubber commemoration.
A sixteen-person colour party from Newry headed the parade and two other colour parties from South Armagh and Louth led the parade the short distance to the Edentubber monument. A wreath bearing section and six bands accompanied them.
At the site of the monument Sinn Féin TD Arthur Morgan from County Louth told the assembled crowd that:”
On a Monday night November 11, 1957 five people lost their lives in a premature explosion here at this spot in Edentubber.
“Those who died were Oliver Craven, Dominic Street, Newry, Paul Smith, The Gardens, Bessbrook, George Keegan, Enniscorthy, Patrick Parle, Wexford.”
The four were in a cottage belonging to Ravensdale man, Michael Watters, who also died in the explosion.
